The New York Times reports some federal officials have a few new “ideas” on how to keep flights safer:

According to a statement posted Saturday morning on Air Canada’s Web site, the Transportation Security Administration will severely limit the behavior of both passengers and crew during flights in United States airspace—restricting movement in the final hour of flight. Late Saturday morning, the T.S.A. had not yet included this new information on its own Web site.“Among other things,” the statement in Air Canada’s Web site read, “during the final hour of flight customers must remain seated, will not be allowed to access carry-on baggage, or have personal belongings or other items on their laps.”

The suspect, identified as Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, tried to light his explosives while the plane was descending into Detroit on Friday.

Hey I hear the guy was wearing jeans, a white t-shirt, and had a few diet cokes so the TSA will be banning those things next week. Here is an idea TSA, how about you proactively figure out how to make air travel easier, instead of  just shit all stupid knee-jerk reactions to things that have already occurred.

Video: Matt Mullenweg Fireside Chat

This is a wonderful hour long interview by Liz Danzico of Matt Mullenweg, founder of both WordPress and Automattic from a few weeks ago. This isn’t about WordPress, but instead open source software, Matt’s insights on design, entrepreneurship, and much more. I’ve seen numerous interviews with Matt about WordPress and blogging, which of course is something he knows like the back of his hand. Hearing him talk about other topics is actually more interesting and highlights just how intelligent and thoughtful the man is.

Greg Sargent of the Washington Post’s The Plum Line has a list of his top five stories that “showcased the world of online journalism at its finest.”

1. The release of the torture documents and Cheney’s response

2. The heath care town hall wars of August

3. The “birther” controversy

4. The campaign to force a public option into the health care reform proposal

5. The war on the left over whether to kill the Senate bill

It is nice to see that in ‘09 online blogging/journalism really seemed to find its footing.

Dick Durbin (D-IL)  as said to Mitch McConnell (R-KY):

Sen. Dick Durbin has a holiday invitation for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other critics of a plan to move Guantanamo detainees to a prison in Illinois: Before you sound alarms about security, come visit the prison yourself.

In an open letter to McConnell, the Illinois Democrat said his GOP colleague “may not have the benefit of all the facts, and I’d like to rectify that.”

So Who Is Responsible For The Deficit?

If you watch MSNBC or CNN (and of course Fox News) you’d think it was Barack Obama. Well, not so much. According to a new report issued by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, and based on figures from the Congressional Budget Office, the Bush tax cuts and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are responsible for a much bigger share of the annual deficit projections than TARP, the stimulus package, and even effects of the economic downturn combined.
