A man surveys hundreds of bodies of earthquake victims at the morgue in Port-au-Prince, Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010.
The Red Cross is now estimating 50,000 dead, although I don’t know how they arrived at that number and I fear the toll could be much higher. In fact, we will probably never know anything close to the exact number. The Boston Globe has a staggering photo gallery if you can stomach it.

Wow. This is a video, shot from an elevated location, right after the earthquake hit the capital Port-au-Prince. I don’t speak French Creole so not sure what they are saying, but at the end you hear a voice shout in English, “The world is coming to an end.” The sheer devastation, from the little we know, seems to be beyond comprehension.

This looks like something I need to see. And based on the reviews I’ve seen thus far, If Heath Ledger had to leave us, as the old Irish lament goes, before he could comb grey hair, it’s a very fine thing that he left us this as his final performance. It is supposed to be something to behold.
